The Heritage Note

Sourced from the historic Pyrenean valley surrounding Bagnères-de-Bigorre, this hand-carved wooden coffret is a triumphant specimen of late 19th-century French *art populaire* (folk art). Master woodcarvers in these thermal mountain towns were celebrated for translating the surrounding flora into organic, deeply tactile works of sculpture.

Constructed with elegant serpentine contours, the lid features a central medallion crowned by a deeply undercut, high-relief carving of grape clusters and curling vine leaves. The surrounding surfaces are textured with fine hand-stippling and incised leaf garlands that wrap around every curve of the body.

Measuring 29 centimeters wide by 11 centimeters high, the interior is lined in vintage lace trim and dark velvet. What truly distinguishes this piece is the presence of its **original working iron key**—an exceptionally rare survival that turns smoothly in the lock mechanism. It is a soulful, highly tactile treasure for a vanity or desk.
